Here at Leyland & Chorley HC, we aim to provide a fun environment for children from the ages of 5 to 17 to develop the skills to play hockey at all levels. We offer the chance for all local children to come along each week and receive basic training in the skills of hockey from our host of qualified coaches. Primarily, we follow the England Hockey Single System of coaching, whereby hockey is coached is the same way from grassroots to international level.
Our focus is on making our game fun, enjoyable and promoting the valued ethics of teamwork through sport. Hockey is inclusive of all ages and abilities where anyone willing to play is actively encouraged to do so. Our training sessions are built upon learning and developing the different skills involved in the participation of full matches. Each week, the children play small-sided games in which to hone and consolidate their skills and develop the team ethics we promote.
Children aged 13 upwards are considered eligible for playing in the senior leagues and so there is a full league programme which they have access to on a Saturday afternoon. At this point, it is hoped that they are armed with enough knowledge that they are not phased by the task of playing in this environment.
Since the inception of our Junior Development Programme in 2013, we have introduced over 20 children into our senior teams, many of which are playing in the top two teams for both the ladies’ and men’s section. It is definitive proof that our approach to coaching is working and retaining our youth players within the sport is very successful.
